The pandemic has completely changed the way most people earn elite airline status. Previously, if you travelled very regularly, either for business or for leisure, it was fairly easy to get there.
However, multiple U.K. lockdowns made it virtually impossible to travel for many since 2020. Without travelling, members holding elite status would not be able to fly enough to requalify for their next membership year.
Rather than risk losing these valuable and loyal customers, airlines across the world have extended status to their members. Extensions have varied from programme to programme but many have extended status for a full two years because, during the las two years, travel has been anything but normal and predictable.
British Airways has consistently offered generous extensions during the pandemic. The exact extension periods depend on when your Tier Point collection date ends each year. For most members, existing elite status should be extended into 2023 (check your Executive Club account for your own status extensions). If you have at least another 12 months of your existing elite status – potentially earned before the pandemic – should you still try and earn as many Tier Points as you can this year, especially given BA Holidays amazing double Tier Points offer currently running?
That brings us to this week’s TPG reader question of the week.
My British Airways Tier Point year ends on 8 March but my status expires on 30 April 2023. Will my Tier Points return to zero then or will roll over into next year? Is there any point in me racking up Tier Points between now when my year ends in March?Julian, TPG Reader
Julian’s status has benefited from an automatic extension from British Airways — his status was supposed to expire in March this year but has now been extended until April 2023. His Tier Points will not roll over (and should reset to zero on 9 March), however, because of the status extension, there is no benefit for Julian in trying to earn more Tier Points between now and March 8.
Even if he did earn the required Tier Points to requalify for his existing status between now and the end of his Tier Point collection date, it would have no benefit because he has already received an extension from BA. After 8 March, if he earns the required Tier Points he would earn that status into 2024. Therefore, if Julian was considering a status run, he should wait until after 8 March this year to do it for optimal status benefit.
