Online shopping portals are a fantastic way to earn lots of miles and points for purchases you are already making. The idea is simple – you start your purchase by visiting a loyalty programmes eStore, such as the British Airways Avios eStore, and then click through to your favourite site and complete your purchase as normal. Same prices, same shopping experience, you just happen to also earn additional points for the purchase.

The amount of points you can earn varies from eStore to e-store and retailer to retailer. Regular promotions could see a new pair of shoes or a Christmas present for your parents earning up to 10 points per £1 spent which is a fantastic offer for a purchase you would already be making anyway.

You can also book hotels through online shopping portals, but this can become a little complicated with points earning. You might recall that you don’t normally receive elite hotel status benefits when you book a hotel stay through a third party booking site like Hotels.com or Expedia.

But what about earning points for your stay with a hotel branded credit card when booking through an online shopping portal?

That brings us to this week’s TPG reader question of the week.

If I make a booking for an Intercontinental hotel via the BA shopping portal and pay with my IHG Rewards credit card, do I still get the full IHG rewards for using my membership number? I’m worried that I won’t get the full amount if Avios are awarded.

Jacqueline, TPG UK Facebook Lounge Member

The good news is that Jacqueline will receive all of her normal IHG points for paying for her stay with her IHG Rewards credit card and adding her IHG Rewards Club number, even if she books through the BA eStore. This is a smart way of booking travel, because it means that Jacqueline will earn:

  • 6 Avios per £1 booking through the BA e-store; plus
  • 2 IHG Rewards Club points per £1 spent by paying with her IHG Rewards Club credit card; and
  • 10 IHG Rewards Club points per $1 spent by staying in an Intercontinental hotel, plus any status or promotional bonuses.

This is a fantastic points earn for a single hotel booking!

Remember to start your next online purchase via an online shopping portal.
