TPG reader question: Can I sell my Avios to someone else?

The pandemic has changed many travel habits. You might find that you are travelling less than you did in 2019, especially long-haul. This means you may not be redeeming your points and miles as regularly, or for the types of aspirational redemptions that can cost 100,000 points or more.

If you’re still regularly purchasing things like groceries, dining out, fuel and doing online shopping, you could still be earning plenty of miles and points each month but without any immediate use for them. Can I sell my British Airways Avios or my American Express Membership Rewards points to someone else? Do you know anyone who can buy them?

While it may cost you next to nothing to earn these miles and points, they certainly have a value. We value points and miles differently each month – for Avios its currently 1.1p each, and Membership Rewards 1.4p each (because of their versatility).

If you had, say 100,000 Avios, that you had no use for it would be tempting to offer them for sale for, say £1,000. Unfortunately it is strictly against the terms and conditions of virtually all loyalty programmes to sell your points and miles to anyone.

Clause B.6.1. of the Avios Terms and Conditions state that:

Membership will terminate automatically… if we reasonably believe that you have committed an act of Fraud or Misconduct against us or any Partner.

Fraud includes selling, bartering and/or purchasing Points or Rewards including attempting to sell or transfer Points or Rewards by means of internet based sales or auctions unless otherwise permitted under these Terms and Conditions.

You are allowed to use your Avios to book redemptions for family and friends provided they are not paying you to do so. Loyalty programmes have very sophisticated fraud departments that regularly monitor and audit accounts with suspicious behaviour.

While a redemption by a Mr Jones for a Mrs Jones at the same residential address would be perfectly fine, a series of redemptions from a completely different country for someone who has a different name might raise a red flag and warrant further investigation.

You are allowed to purchase miles and points directly from the programme who issues them but you cannot sell them.

There are some third-party mileage brokers that will offer to purchase your points and miles with no questions asked. But be warned, this is also against the terms and conditions of the likes of Avios and Membership Rewards. Taking companies up on these kinds of offers will run the risk of the points being forfeited, your account being closed without warning and potentially even being banned for life from a programme.

It’s not worth the risk.

Even if you are not travelling there are plenty of ways to redeem your Avios without travelling though you will generally receive the best value from redeeming your points and miles for flights.
