The coronavirus lockdown has left us all yearning for a return to the skies. While the FCO still advises against all non-essential international travel, some countries around Europe and around the world have announced that they’re reopening their borders for tourism.

As such, many wanderlust travellers who had just spent three months at home have been taking to booking holidays away. But is summer travel too soon?

While we’re holding off on booking any summer holiday for now, that doesn’t mean everyone is. TPG U.K. advises travellers to follow FCO advice, which means not travelling until the current guidance has been revised. But for some, booking a summer holiday is great for having something to look forward to while we wait for that final FCO guidance to be lifted.

We asked our TPG UK Lounge members to share what it’ll take for them to get back to flying. Here’s a look at some of our favourite answers. (Some responses have been lightly edited for style and clarity.)

Those who are travelling this summer

“We are holidaying in Wales for the summer and then heading to Spain in October. We already had to cancel a trip to Spain in April, and I can’t go through that pain of cancellation again!” — Robert W.

“Still holding on to a pre-coronavirus booking to Bermuda for my honeymoon in August, so I’m checking daily what’s happening with that. For new bookings, I’m playing it safe and going to Scotland in July, rather than going abroad. I’ve also booked flights to Portugal for September, as they seem happy to take tourists.” — Tommy A.

“Venice in July, Poland in August and Dubai in September. Some absolute deals to be had with flights and hotels at the moment. All looking hopeful as more counties are opening up each week!” — Louis P.

“I’ve booked Australia to Greece departing on 6 July! Super keen to get some sun!” — Josh W.

“I am only flying in Europe this summer with more than 12 flights booked. In fact, I took my first flight from Man to CDG last week. One word of warning: Take a jumper as the crew on my flight had the air con on full to circulate the air more quickly.” — Mark E.

“I booked a family trip to Dublin for August bank holiday weekend. It was £150 per persono, so a bargain for BA flights. The trip was booked in lockdown, so we can get a voucher for next year if we don’t want to go.” — Jack B.

“I’m going to Portugal for 17 days in July. TAP cancelled my flights from Manchester but I was able to change the flights to Heathrow.” — Jonathan T.

“Spain at the end of August in a rented apartment. I would usually go all-inclusive further afield, but who knows how hotels will be operating in the coming months. Didn’t want to be disappointed!” — Kieran N.

Those hoping to travel but have had holidays cancelled or are waiting for government restrictions to be lifted

“I want to get going now and am happy to wear a mask. My girlfriend lives in the U.S., and I’m just waiting for the government to allow people travelling from the U.K. in. As soon as that happens, I will be on a plane.” — Phil C.

“I’ve got a trip to the Netherlands for August that has been booked since last year. But I’ve been looking at various potential destinations for other trips, so once we know we can travel and where will accept British visitors, I’ll get booking something.” — Anthony M.

“Not booking anything as of yet — at least until the U.K. scraps quarantine. Still have a BA travel voucher. Also my main issue is prices, and more importantly, airline schedules aren’t the most convenient right now for me personally so I’m waiting until they ramp up again.” — Matt T.

“Had our three destination summer holidays scrapped, and now hoping that our anniversary trip to Nice and Sitges happens at the end of August. I’ve promised myself that I’ll make up for this year’s disappointments when 2021 comes around.” — Johnny T.

“As soon as the U.S. ease its restrictions I will be booking two weeks in The Bahamas for travel through Miami, as there is no date when direct flights from LHR may resume.” — Mike G.

Those not travelling this summer or still deciding

“Staying put for now. Was planning on going to the U.S.A. later in the year to introduce my new baby to my mum, but waiting until next year. Hoping by then flights from MAN to the States resume, as it’s more convenient for us.” — Liberty N.

“I’m supposed to be flying business class with BA in late August, from Newcastle to Athens via Heathrow. Our Airbnb can be cancelled with full refund until 12 August and I can apply for the flight voucher, so I’m biding my time and waiting until late July to decide whether or not to go.” — Helen A.
