Like many of our readers, our team didn’t travel as much, or as normally in 2021 as we did before the pandemic. We have big plans for 2022, both personally and professionally and once we are over the hump of this latest variant, expect a more normal travel experience next year.

With so many long-delayed trips now possible and all those travel vouchers to redeem, here are our travel goals for 2022.

I have a simple goal for 2022: I’d like to visit a new country.

Before the pandemic, I would manage this several times each year though recently it’s been harder to pop off to some far-flung, exotic destination on a whim, and I’ve visited all the usual suspects several times over.

There are only two of the 47 European countries I’m yet to visit (Andorra and Belarus) so that would be a good place to start, though visiting Belarus even next year seems unlikely.

I have flights booked to a rescheduled wedding in Bali next year. Though it’s a popular destination for Australians, I’ve never actually visited Indonesia so I’m hoping to be able to travel there in 2022.

I’ve also wanted to visit St Lucia ever since I first saw my first photo of their famous Pitons mountains – maybe next year will be the year?

Having only ever travelled economy, I would love to experience first class this year!

As far as destinations go my list is huge but the unifier of my absolute ‘must dos’ is friends and family.

First up, I’d like to hike the Camøno trail with my brother — he lives in Copenhagen and it’s been two years since we were able to spend time together outside of boozy video calls. After that I have a friends wedding in Italy, I’m fairly sure it will be the first time so many of my friends have all been together in one place for two years, let alone on foreign soil. And then Poland to visit the family I believed we had lost to World War II but discovered were still alive and kicking at the very onset of the pandemic.

I can’t promise I won’t cry multiple times during all of these trips. And then? Hopefully onto somewhere sunny and swish via first class to reflect on how emotional the last few years have made me.

It’s been at the top of my list for a long time now, but I swear 2022 is the year I will finally make it to Japan. Had it not been for the pandemic I would have ticked this off at the end of 2020, but I’m determined to make up for lost time with a week-long trip to Tokyo.

Since starting my points and miles journey three years ago I’ve accumulated around 200,000 points and what better way to use them than a business- or first-class redemption on one of ANA’s highly-praised products?

The places on top of my list are Guatemala, Peru, Jordan, and Morocco. I would also love to experience a celebration or big event somewhere – the Day of the Dead in Mexico or the Lantern Festival in Thailand have both been a dream of mine for a long time.

I also have a goal of going from beginner to expert when it comes to points and miles!

I’ve been banging on about this one for a number of years now but in 2022, I WILL visit South Africa! I had put my best foot forward in 2021 and booked flights with Virgin Atlantic flying into Johannesburg and out of Cape Town 10 days later. COVID did not cooperate with this trip and it remains firmly at the top of my to-do list.
