As the travel industry continues to react to the effects of the coronavirus outbreak, the U.K.’s largest travel group TUI has announced that all holidays for the next five weeks have been cancelled. The move comes after the company initially suspended package travel, cruises and hotel operations on 16 March.

In a tweet on Wednesday, the travel company announced that customers with holidays up to and including 14 May will have their trips cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak.

In the announcement, TUI said that customers who have travel booked up to 30 June 2020 are eligible to amend their holiday for free.

“We continue to comply with the government’s social distancing rules, which means our customer service teams are working from home”, the Group said. “We’re receiving an extraordinarily high volume of contact, so we’re still kindly asking that you don’t call or message us unless it’s absolutely urgent”.

The group said that if your trip is cancelled by the new restrictions, it will contact you to discuss your options.

Under European law, if your trip was cancelled, you will be eligible for a cash refund if you prefer that rather than accepting a voucher or moving your trip to a later date.

Given the number of countries closing their borders, many airlines and travel groups like TUI have no choice but to suspend flights and operations. Most airlines globally have put waivers in place for customers even if flights have not been cancelled.
