Uber Will Now Kick Rude Aussie, Kiwi Riders Off Its App

Beginning Sept. 18, ride-share giant Uber will begin suspending Australians and New Zealanders with a passenger rating below four out of five stars. The temporary ban would last six months and is part of a pilot program designed to improve passenger behavior, according to Uber.
A similar policy was introduced in Brazil earlier this year, but Australia and New Zealand will be the first English-speaking markets to experience the new change.
Susan Anderson, the general director for Uber in Australia and New Zealand, said that riders who held a four-star rating or lower would be passengers who had received multiple one-star reviews from drivers over a number of rides. “These are the small percentage of riders who are persistently not treating drivers with respect,” Anderson said, stating that poor passenger behavior included users not meeting their drivers at the designated pick-up spots, or requesting to be picked up at unsafe areas on the road. “Be polite and considerate,” Anderson said. “Take your rubbish with you and don’t make a mess in the car.”
An Uber spokesperson told the BBC that only “a few thousand” of the company’s 2.8 million Aussie and Kiwi riders currently hold ratings of four stars or less. “The vast majority,” or more than 90%, had ratings of at least 4.5, according to Uber, and passengers will receive several warnings before they are banned. Over the past month, Uber has also distributed a number of general etiquette and behavior tips in hopes of improving passenger behavior and correlated customer ratings.
TPG reached out to Uber to determine whether visiting travelers to Australia or New Zealand would also be subject to the ride-share ban, but had not received a response as of the time of this post.
The company sent out a number of tips to Australia and New Zealand users last month aimed at improving customer scores.
