We’ve been asking to hear your travel success and mistake stories to both celebrate and help our TPG U.K. community. We’ve also been featuring the travel stories from our very own TPG U.K. team.
“Before the coronavirus pandemic began, I had booked a cheap flight with Wizz Air to visit Moldova in April, flying between Chisinau (KIV), Moldova and London Luton (LTN).
Wizz Air cancelled the flight after grounding its entire fleet and offered me 120% in Wizz credit, which was nice and easy to collect. I thought that was the end of it, but when I checked my Lloyds bank account (I had paid for the flight with a Lloyds debit card, as Wizz doesn’t accept American Express), to my surprise Lloyds had also refunded me the cost of the flight.
I thought perhaps this was a mistake, but it turns out Lloyds has a surprise and delight programme called ‘It’s On Us’ where it randomly pays back thousands of different customers each month for small purchases they make with their Lloyds cards.
The fare was only £26, so this wasn’t a huge windfall, but it was a nice surprise in these uncertain times!”
Jean’s experience is a good reminder that it pays to pick the right card. While we don’t typically recommend using a debit card, sometimes the benefits could outweigh the rewards. In this example, it was purely chance.
Airlines are currently offering generous coronavirus-related travel waiver policies which differ from airline to airline — you can read our guide here.
