British travellers heading to Canada have a more seamless booking option. Virgin Atlantic has announced a new codeshare partnership with WestJet. Virgin Atlantic passengers can now book flights direct from London Gatwick (LGW) to Canada with WestJet on Virgin Atlantic’s site.

WestJet currently flies from Gatwick to Calgary (YYC) and Toronto (YYZ) year-round, as well as to Halifax (YHZ) and Vancouver (YVR) seasonally. WestJet has been growing its London services and is now the third-largest carrier between the U.K. and Canada after Air Canada and British Airways.

Virgin will codeshare on all four of these routes by using its flight code. WestJet operates flights to 28 domestic Canadian destinations including Edmonton (YEG), Quebec (YQB) and Montreal (YUL).

“We’re delighted to add WestJet to our growing portfolio”, said Juha Jarvinen, EVP Commercial at Virgin Atlantic. This new partnership will open up a plethora of Canadian destinations to our customers and offer more choice for those looking to fly directly to Canada. Customers will have the security and ease of booking through a codeshare and we are sure our customers will enjoy flying with WestJet”.

Virgin Atlantic does not fly to Canada on its own metal, though passengers can connect on Delta services from the U.S. Delta hubs Virgin fly to. This represents the first time Virgin has sold direct flights from the U.K. to Canada through its own sales channels. Unfortunately, for members of its Flying Club programme, Virgin Atlantic has confirmed to TPG that for the time being, passengers will not earn Flying Club miles on WestJet-operated codeshare flights, and nor will they be able to redeem Flying Club miles for WestJet flights. Hopefully if the codeshare is successful, these benefits will be added.
