Newcastle is getting a new connection to Spain. Ahead of the anticipated busy summer travel season, low-cost carrier Vueling has announced it plans to operate a seasonal route between Newcastle (NCL) and Barcelona (BCN).
The new route will operate between July and October to capitalise on the peak summer travel season. It will operate with two weekly frequencies — on Wednesdays and Sundays.
The route will operate on the following schedule, with fares starting from £28 one-way:
- VY8782 Barcelona (BCN) 1:05 p.m. Departure ⇒ Newcastle (NCL) 2:45 p.m. Arrival
- VY8783 Newcastle (NCL) 3:25 p.m. Departure ⇒ Barcelona (BCN) 7 p.m. Arrival

When the new route launches with Vueling, it will be the first connection between Newcastle and Barcelona since EasyJet dropped the route last year, as first reported by Business Traveller.
“We know our passengers wanted us to reinstate a direct service to Barcelona so we are delighted to have been able to secure the return of this route with Vueling, especially during these extremely challenging times,” Newcastle Airport head of aviation development Leon McQuaid said in a statement.
“We are confident that as international travel resumes Barcelona will once again be a popular choice for the North East travelling public, not only with passengers looking for a city break destination but also with those looking for a beach holiday or as a gateway to explore the rest of Spain,” McQuaid said.
Vueling is part of International Airlines Group, or IAG, which is the same group that owns British Airways, Aer Lingus and Iberia, among others.
Newcastle Airport will get a few new routes for this summer. As of 28 June, Lufthansa will launch daily service between the airport and Frankfurt (FRA). Additionally, as of 28 May, Scottish regional carrier Loganair will launch twice-weekly service between Newcastle and Jersey (JER).
