On Sunday night, rapper Wale allegedly was told by an American Airlines employee that he wasn’t “supposed to be in first class,” and if he didn’t leave, they would call the police.
The 33-year-old rapper, whose given name is Olubowale Victor Akintimehin, was flying on American Airlines Flight 133 from New York (JFK) to Los Angeles (LAX). Akintimehin originally took to Twitter to complain about severe delays on the flight — it ended up departing five hours late, according to FlightRadar24.
According to a screenshot Akintimehin tweeted, he was booked in first class on the aircraft, one of American’s A321Ts. However, he then tweeted that two AA employees told him he wasn’t “supposed to be in first class” and that they would be “calling the police.”
Akintimehin called the airline racist, insisting to know what will happen next.
TPG reached out to American Airlines and received the following statement: “Discrimination has no place at American Airlines. From the team members we hire to the customers we serve, inclusion and diversity is a way of life at American. Every day, our team members work to make American a place where people of all generations, races, ethnicities, genders, sexual orientations, religious affiliations and backgrounds feel welcome and valued. We are concerned about the comments from Mr. Akintimehin, and our team is reaching out to him to gather more information about what occurred last night.”
In October 2017, the NAACP warned African Americans against traveling with AA. As a result, AA required anti-discrimination training for all employees. In July of this year, the NAACP lifted its travel advisory against American Airlines.
