With congestion and busy schedules, having to race across any major city fills locals and commuters with dread. In most cities, there’s a wide range of options to take you from A to B, and London is no different. Uber alone even offers three methods of transport.

We decided to pit these three Uber options — bike, boat and car — against one another in a race across London. Liam, Jean and I travelled from Westminster to Canary Wharf to judge comfort, price and, most importantly, speed.

Head of Video Jean Arnas took a bike (now operated by Lime), I took the Uber Boat and Social Media Editor Liam Spencer took an UberX car.

Boat – Nicky Kelvin

  • Comfort: 9/10
  • Speed: 42 mins
  • Cost: £7.20

I found it wonderful to completely avoid traffic on the roads. There was lots of space on the Uber Boat and the seating is comfortable, with a choice of inside or outside. Sightseeing is great with fantastic and unrestricted views of some of the best London sights like the Palace of Westminster and Tower Bridge. It was also great that there were onboard refreshments available to purchase.

On the downside, you are tied to a strict schedule and actual journey times are longer than other methods of transport. Also, as the route network is restricted to ports along the river, you will need to walk or take other transport if your departure or arrival point isn’t close to these set ports.

Car – Liam Spencer

  • Comfort: 8/10
  • Speed: 25 mins
  • Cost: £16.23

Liam found the driver to be extremely friendly and polite. It was a quick service from start to finish, with the car taking less than two minutes to arrive and there were barely any holdups along the way. Liam said the cab was spotless and the driver wore a mask for the entire journey

Unfortunately, it was more expensive than alternative methods like the Tube, bike and boat, and traffic can be a serious issue in central London.

Bike – Jean Arnas

  • Comfort: 6/10
  • Speed: 29 mins
  • Cost: £6.27

In Jean’s experience, it was very easy to find a bike. They were everywhere, and it took less than one minute from selecting the bike to actually riding. It was also very convenient, as you can drop off the bike pretty much anywhere you want. Jean loved the electric boost on the bike, which made cycling fast, fun and very easy.

It wasn’t all brilliant. Jean’s bike didn’t have much battery to start with, and he was worried it would die while he was racing. Jean found that riding gets very uncomfortable — London roads are not smooth! Finally, for longer journeys, it’s not such a cheap method of transport.
