Ultra-low-cost airline Wizz Air has been accused of charging a peculiar new fee for some customers searching for flights with ad-blocking software installed.

As first discovered by travel writer Noel Philips on Twitter, the airline added a mystery “System Surcharge” fee of £10, which only appeared when ad-blocking software was active. When the software was switched off, the prices reverted to normal, without the additional surcharge.

Ultra-low-cost airlines like Wizz are well known for charging additional fees and surcharges for everything from hand luggage to priority security screening and even text message updates. With all the bells and whistles, a £9.99 advertised fare can easily add up to over £100. However, these charges are usually completely optional and are chosen by the traveller individually, rather than being added without explanation.

The TPG team has run multiple searches across various routes on Wizz Air’s own website, from browsers in different countries, to check for this surcharge ourselves. We have, so far, not been seen this surcharge, with or without ad-blocking software.

“The use of automations for booking (robots) require additional hosting efforts and for such activities, Wizz Air applies a system surcharge fee”, Wizz Air explained to Skift on the issue. “AdBlockers are not explicitly forbidden, nor triggering our protection to be detected as a robot. But in a very rare situation, due to bugs in the AdBlockers, they can make the browser act unexpectedly, and flagged by our security tools as suspicious. So, just to be sure, we recommend to turn off AdBlockers in case of any issues”.

If you do book any Wizz Air flights and notice any unexplained extra charges in your booking summary, turn off ad-blocking software, which should remove the surcharge.
